Rory McIlroy was my pick for the Masters. He shot a 77 on Friday to pretty much end his chances of winning a green jacket. Rory was the eighth straight major pick I made without a winner. I say this every time, but I might finally be due for a winner. I correctly picked Tonalist to win the Belmont Stakes over California Chrome. So my confidence is at an all-time high.
First off, I'm not going with an American. Only three times in the past 10 years has an American won. That leads me to one of my favorite golfers, Graeme McDowell. He won the 2010 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and he came in second in 2012. He is not my pick however. Almost. But I'm going with another European. So without further ado.
Victor Dubuisson from France... just kidding... kind of.
My real pick is Sergio Garcia at 35/1. The 34-year-old Spaniard has yet to win a major. He has however finished in the top ten at majors 18 times in his career. In 2005, the last time the U.S. Open was played at Pinehurst, Sergio had his best U.S. Open finish, tying for third. I just have a hunch about Serg. Last year three of the four major winners had never won a major before. Sergio is certainly due for a win.
Guest Picks ---
Tim Leavitt is going with Jordan Spieth at 20/1. Not a bad pick considering the 20-year-old finished second at the Masters. This is his third U.S. Open appearance. In 2012 he was the low amateur finishing in 21st. But last year at Merion he missed the cut. Tim originally was going to pick Angel Cabrera at 150/1. I'm not sure why he backed off the 2007 U.S. Open champ considering he said Angel was, "Free Money." Hopefully the change doesn't come back to haunt him.
Mike Moriarty is going with Jason Day at 25/1. Last year I picked Day to win the U.S. Open and he didn't let me down as much as some of my other picks. The Australian has played in three U.S. Opens. He has finished as the runner-up twice, including last year. It will not be surprising at all if Day is near the top of the leader board on Sunday.
P.S. Argentina is winning the World Cup. 4/1. Book it.
