Americans have not done very well in recent history at The Open Championship. Only one winner in the past six years (Stewart Cink, 2009). So that eliminates any American golfer for me, including Tiger. I think he is really in the danger zone of not catching Jack Nicklaus. He hasn't won a major in over five years. It's mind boggling to really think about that considering how dominant he was.
A sneaky pick might be Ernie Els at 28/1. He is the defending Open Champion and he won the 2002 Championship at Muirfield, the same course they are playing this year. I'm not going to pick him to win this year but if he does, then I'm probably just going to give myself credit.
Anyways, onto the pick (or picks actually).
Two guests picks for the Open Championship. Michael Moriarty is going with Lee Westwood at 25/1, who has finished in the top 3 of all majors but never sealed the deal. However, this may be the year for first time major winners, as Adam Scott and Justin Rose have already broken through. Tim Leavitt is also going with a guy who is always in the hunt but is also major-less, Ian Poulter at 50/1. Poulty made the cut at Muirfield in 2002 in only his second major event. Good luck guys.
I am also going with a Englishman who has never won a major. Luke Donald at 28/1. Donald was in the hunt at the U.S. Open until his 75 on Sunday but he still finished tied for 8th. Last year at the Open Championship he had his best finish, tying for fifth. I just have a hunch Luke might be in this thing. Lets hope. Enjoy the tourney.
P.S. These players are lucky I wasn't invited to play. My golf game has been looking pretty pretty good recently. Clearly just jinxed myself with this P.S.
